Who is Cutlass Velo?

Tommy Barse, owner and operator of Cutlass Velo.

Cutlass Velo is the culmination of over a decade of bike courier experience, retail shop experience, custom frame painting knowledge, and working closely with respected industry builders and contributors.

I have chosen to work with Bishop Bikes / Item 4 Bicycles (steel) for custom frame builds and Time Bicycles for carbon frame-up builds. My approach is building the right bike for your needs that aren’t marketing towards trends and planned obsolescence. There are other options available for discussion but the brands mentioned fabricate the best bikes I have ridden and worked on.

We can discuss service options after we perform a detailed mechanical evaluation. Typically, two estimates are provided; an as-needed estimate and a complete overhaul estimate. At this point you’re welcome to use this information to make a decision on the best path forward with your bike’s service or to seek a second opinion.

Behind the name cutlass

January 6th, 2012 was an abnormally warm day. I was making my last delivery of SDAT filings to my client in Camden Yards. Two blocks from my starting point I was right-hooked by a 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass. Before I knew it I was looking at the undercarriage of the car - stuck for a few moments with thoughts of my demise. In a moment of panic the driver accelerated; dragging me for several feet and crushing my head and helmet into the ground with the rear differential. I spent four days in University of Maryland Shock Trauma unit for assessment. My list of injuries include 6 fractured vertebrae, fractured sternum, collapsed/punctured lung, fractured ribs, and various other tears, road rash/bruising. In my physical and emotional recovery I knew that I wanted to fortify my passion and skillset within the industry and take ownership of this horrible experience. And that’s when Cutlass Velo was born.
