Evaluation: Searching for Secrets in a Cervelo S3

Introducing a new series

One of the more fulfilling and enlightening processes that happens here in the studio is performing mechanical evaluations. The secrets that bikes possess are intriguing and exciting: they present teachable moments and provide the opportunity to build an effective plan for solutions.

I’m excited to share glimpses of the process from evaluations. This series will feature client bikes that highlight the unique situations that come through the door.

I recently had the opportunity to perform an evaluation for a new client on a 2017 Cervelo S3 equipped with mechanical shifting and rim brakes.

Have a look at a few of the secrets unveiled.

The rider had written on the intake: It's got some mystery noises and the front wheel has some play.

The play attributed to the front wheel was caused by worn out 6900 bearings. The mystery noises were likely caused by a cacaphony of the right pedal, the play in the front wheel, the dry and corroded nature of the rear hub internals and axle.

The service has already been completed and rider has sent a nice email after their first ride:

Hi Tommy,

I just came back from a quick spin and my bike feels amazing. Everything is super smooth! No noises. No rattling. Just buttery goodness!

Thank you so much!

I look forward to sharing more evaluations related to this series.

There are more entries in the pipeline - I’m working on my experience assembling a Canyon Speedmax CF SLX.
